Squarefish - Indie Rock Goodness

Squarefish is a classically trained quartet out of Long Beach, and they are exactly the kind of band we’re proud to have here on Masspire: small, new, and wicked good. Squarefish consists of (mostly) alums from CSULB, with Maggie Boles on guitar/vocals, Mike Amico on bass/backing vocals, Lauren Pennington on keys, and Anthony Vezirion on drums.

Squarefish’s first EP, “Olive Juice,” is more solid than most records we buy from mainstream musicians. We’ve had the EP rocking on repeat for the past week, and there’s no patches that we feel like we have to skip over. The highlight is the song that gives the EP its name: “Olive Juice” an intensely bittersweet song about Maggie’s difficulty finding love for anyone, that still manages to retain a strong undercurrent of optimism. There’s more songs worth exploring though, from the skillful lyrics of “Ode to Picasso,” to the quirkiness of “Squish,” and the amusing tell off that is “My Name is George.”

If you like that there’s more to come. Squarefish plans to release their new EP very soon. Mike Amico tells us that the band is getting a sense of how to work together as a whole, and the new EP will take their sound up another step. Given how good their first EP was, we’re looking forward to it.
